"The future of our civilization, our liberties, our very existence may depend upon the acceptance of her commands." --William Thomas Walsh

This was the conclusion reached by William Thomas Walsh, distinguished author, historian, and teacher, after he had thorougly investigated the miracle of Fatima. Here is the whole remarkable story of the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three simple children at an obscure Portuguese village in 1917. Her prophecies of World War II and the rise of communism, her plea to humanity to do penance, her promise that world peace and the conversion of Russia would take place if her messages were heeded -- these are some of the dramatic events in this fascinating account of a modern miracle.

Our Lady of Fatima is a magnificent re-creation of an event whose effects are still reverberating throughout the world -- the appearance in person of the Mother of God with a "peace plan from heaven."

"This is a wonderful book on the apparitions at Fatima and the lives of the children and their families during this special time. I started the book thinking I would read some of it each day, but when I started, I couldn't put it down. I wish there were more books like this one - amazing. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about this wonderful message from Our Lady. The book arrived in excellent condition and much faster than I anticipated."

Our Lady of Fatima William T Walsh 9780385028691 Books Reviews

  • This is a wonderful book on the apparitions at Fatima and the lives of the children and their families during this special time. I started the book thinking I would read some of it each day, but when I started, I couldn't put it down. I wish there were more books like this one - amazing. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about this wonderful message from Our Lady. The book arrived in excellent condition and much faster than I anticipated.
  • Had this book many years ago and it never gets old. The story is for all generations. Reading this brought my daughter back to the Catholic Church. Never could figure out how the "Miracle of the Sun" got ignored even with the reports from the media at that time, and is still ignored...
  • Absolutely terrific book about Our Lady. Written by a journalist that traveled to the village where it occurred, to interview many of the people involved directly in the apparitions. A truly inspiring story, and well documented. I've heard others say this is the best description of these events that we have, and after reading it, I have to say I felt nothing was lacking. If you had a question, it was almost always answered along the way.
  • This is an excellent account of Our Lady's apparitions in Fatima. One of the best published. It is a true story of the events that took place, and not an attempt of theological interpretation. This book was originally published in 1947, just 30 years after the events in Fatima. In preparation, the author interviewed many persons who were eye witnesses to the account, including the parents of Jacinta and Francisco. He also had a personal interview with Lucia, as well as many written correspondences. He makes extensive references to her memoirs. The author uses these sources to carefully reconstruct the events leading up to our Lady's apparitions, the events during the apparitions, and then after the apparitions. He also details the personalities and characteristics of the children (Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco) and their families, the political climate, the church, the culture, etc. All of which help to provide a context for the events that took place, the reactions of various persons and factions, and consequences. Without a question, the book is engaging to read, and hard to put down, and is life changing.

It is a wonderful book to give to someone who is not familiar with the events of Fatima. It tells the story, and lets the reader make the interpretations. The facts speak for themselves. I purchased two copies for my children to read over the Christmas break. The youngest reading it is 11 at this time, and is enjoying it. My oldest (21) stayed up all night one night reading it, as he could not put it down.
  • I have read different Lady of Fatima books and this one gives the most detail with history. This is truly the best book to read to understand the whole story from the beginning. I truly believe that reading this book will help you fully understand and appreciate the true story of Our Lady of Fatima that you will read in any other books. Even after reading this, I read other books and I feel that having read this one enriched my understanding of other Fatima books that I read.
  • What better time to read up on the great miracle of the 20th century than on the 100th anniversary? Dr. Walsh provides ample research and testimonials of the history of the events surrounding the Fatima apparition while still keeping his book geared towards a popular audience.
  • I have read many books on Fatima and I consider myself an amateur expert on Fatima. This book has a supernatural quality to it, in that it lights a fire in one's heart for the Blessed Mother and the message she brought from Heaven for all of us to know. In these dire times, we had all better heed her requests. Pray the rosary, wear the scapular and live the message and requests of Our Lady of Fatima.
  • I bought this book because I love reading about Marian apparitions, and I have always believed in what took place at Fatima in 1917. This book goes into full detail about the children and their lives. It describes their daily life, their family, and the events that led up to the apparitions. It really gives you a clear understanding of what all took place during the apparitions, and give you the true story of what the children experienced and suffered during this time. This book also continues to tell us what happened to the children and fanilies after the apparitions, which was very interesting. The descrition of the Oct. 13th apparition is extraordinary! It will WOW you! This is a terrific book about Fatima. If you want the full story of what happened, then get this book!

Born months before the start of World War I, William L. Adams left the North Carolina cotton fields behind forever in 1929 and moved to Baltimore as part of the Great Migration. At the age of 15, he became a numbers runner to support himself. With a preternatural understanding of finance and business, he rapidly ascended, becoming the head of his own illegal gambling operation. His leadership of the racket led to an attempt on his life by the Mafia, repeated criminal prosecutions, testimony before a special investigative committee of the U.S. Senate, and a landmark Supreme Court case. Unlike so many other kingpins, Adams emerged from the underworld and used his influence and resources for good, launching and financing scores of legal businesses, including the first black-owned company to go public on Wall Street, and supporting numerous candidates for elected office, all with the goal of empowering Baltimore's black community economically, politically, and socially.

"The odd title of this book, Relationomics, is the author’s way of communicating the vital importance of healthy relationships to healthy organizational economics. He defines relationomics as:

“…the study of the observable impact that relationships have on economic activity. It’s an assessment of the value created by relationships as opposed to simply a fiscal transactional analysis. In the marketplace, a significant causal correlation exists between the strength of the relationship and the flow of resources. The stronger and healthier the relationships, the more productive and profitable the transactions between those parties tend to be” (p. 36).

I found this an extremely practical and wise book that rings true to my years as a director in a religious non-profit, and challenged me to take a look at my own relational practices. The book is organized around four relational qualities, with several chapters under each of the following: intentionality, humility, accountability, and sustainability. I’ll share some of the most valuable insights and takeaways for me from each section.

Intentionality. As a kid who grew up as something of a loner, his chapter on The Great Deception names a lesson I’ve had to learn–that growth comes in relationships as we have others who encourage, sharpen, and challenge us. He calls the effort to grow outside of relationships the “Luciferian lie.” When organizations treat people as pawns and foster cut-throat competition rather than collaboration, they suffer. He argues that effective leaders foster remarkable cultures where people “believe the best in one another, want the best for one another, and expect the best from one another” (p. 63).

Humility. Humble leaders know themselves well and are comfortable in their own skin, which breeds in turn authenticity and empathy. He describes two kinds of growth spirals. One is descending characterized by defensiveness, rationalization, stagnation, and alienation. The other is ascending, characterized by openness, honest evaluation, solution orientation, and inspiration through unity. He also proposes a Poor Man’s 360 question that I intend to use: “What’s it like for you to be on the other side of me?” He also states that there are two kinds of leaders in organizations. There are value creators, who bring more to the table than they take away, enriching the lives of others and their relationships. There are also value extractors, who get more from you than they offer. It shows up at networking events, and Ross proposes a practice he calls “NetWeaving,” of looking for ways, to connect others with common interest, “paying it forward,” as it were. Often we don’t lead like this because of fear, which great leaders transcend when they decide that being open-handed actually creates for them a greater capacity to receive as well as give.

Accountability. Good organizational relationships flourish when everyone’s OAR is in the water: when there is ownership, accountability, and responsibility. Good organizations have accountability in how they engage in workplace conflicts, the goal of which is to avoid throwing sand. Sometimes this means practicing RAW conversations. These Reveal reality, Advance creative dialogue, and Wrestle with solutions. This last seems particularly important–that both stay at the table (with time outs if it gets too emotional) until there is resolution.

Sustainability. This circles back to the idea of leaders who move beyond self-interest in their leadership. They are grounded leaders who are emotionally mature, have established convictions, and are determined. They are “rooted in reality, emotionally centered, relationally rich, results-oriented, other focused, mission-minded.” He offers a great example in the founder of Chobani, Hamdi Ulukaya, who is committed to high wages for his workers, and a share of the enterprise. His insights about the revolving door of employee turnover focuses on how most organizations hire too quickly, and he contrasts Chick-fil-A, where hires are interviewed by every person they will directly relate to in the organization over an extended period.

Each chapter includes reflection questions to help one crystallize the chapter content and apply it to one’s own situation. The writing style is clear, personal, filled with illustrations and acronyms to help remember the content. If that is not sufficient, Ross includes a glossary at the end of the book. For those looking for an approach to relationships that is faith-based, you may recognize biblical allusions and principles in the writing. But because this seems directed to a wider audience, there are no Bible references or discussions of faith in the workplace.

There are lessons here for any relational context, including marriage. This is especially valuable for anyone who leads a team or an organization–whether a sports club, a work group or business, a task force, or a church or non-profit group. Unhealthy relationships can suck the life out of an organization. Healthy relationships with a high performing team can be exhilarating. Randy Ross’s book can help a leader, who is ready to learn, to develop the latter.

  • Dr Randy Ross is incredible at simplifying and relating concepts in such a way that we yearn to come back for more! Randy’s approach is parallel to that of a supurb coach, pushing fundamentals,
doing what is right and necessary in order for your best to be given each day! This book will help make your teams stronger while connecting motivational dots that will inspire trust, maximize performance, and create a compelling/remarkable culture. Randy practices what he preaches, and I appreciate him so much! I purchased extra books for my wrestlers that I coach, and feel that any business should book him to speak...it was with the investment! Randy was precisely what our area businesses needed to hear!

  • Relationomics, a must read by all those in leadership and sales. Real and relatable relationships do matter. In today's highly connected and digitally driven business world, we tend to sometimes overlook the fact that relationships are vital to growth. In business today, sincerity, substance and heart will win out. Dr. Randy Ross does a fantastic job outlining this in Relationomics.
  • I bought this book on an impulse at the airport. After reading the first chapter I purchased 12 more books for my leadership team. It is absolutely incredible. It is common sense steps to improving your leadership team.
  • Very powerful book, insightful and if your honest about yourself & your relationships, ready to ask serious questions, but most importantly ready work on relationships in your life....get on board!
After reading 75% of book, I purchased 3 more for my salaried assistant managers.
  • I just wish I’d had this in my hands 25 years ago. No telling the relationship strength I’d have today! Thank you Dr. Randy!

  • "Relationomics" by Randy Ross is a great title for anyone who truly wants to make the work environment a positive place. Indeed, doing so, can be a great challenge in some organizations. Around 260 pages, the book addresses many issues on the topic, including

    1. Posturing, promoting, and self-protection are toxic for relationships (AMEN to that!).
    2. Good information alone will not result in lasting change.
    3. Competition that minimizes others is the antithesis of servant leadership.
    4. Being authentic means you are comfortable in your own skin and have no need to self-promote, pretend, or protect.
    5. Importance of transparency and humility at work (of course, we are talking about appropriate transparency).
    6. The two types of people in the world.
    7. 4 steps for personal growth.
    8. Characteristics of grounded leadership.

The book is well-written, smoothly transitions from topic to topic, and contains several practical examples and suggestions for applying the particular topic to your life. Will refer to again as a helpful future reference. You spend plenty of hours at work, so why not do your part to make your workplace positive, regardless your title?

I was given a review copy by Baker Books in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.

  • Is a refreshing review of a period in the history of Spain that few have knowledge about. Is a valuable piece to start understanding the evolution of the "Spanish,-Castellano" language, and the origin of some words that today's world considers mispronounced.
  • Universal and always a great read.
  • Great book thank you!!
  • There are a few typos but nothing major. It's really nice to have the short stories separately so that you can search for something specific within the specific novella and not search the entire book of Exemplary Novels.

  • Spy Hook is the book that serendipitously introduced me to Len Deighton's Bernard Samson on a cool, Southern California evening with little to do. Little did I know that Deighton is a master, that Bernard would become one of my favorite characters, regardless of medium, and that I would devour the other books in the three trilogies of the life and trials of Bernard Samson.

Since discovering this author, book, series only a year and a half ago, I have read the series three times and each time been completely drawn into the delightfully dark world that Deighton has created for perhaps the most under-celebrated hero of all time.
  • Let me preface this by stating that Deighton is a brilliant spy story novelist. That being said, I consider this book a kind of background reference, and interesting to us who have been hooked to read the series up to this point. There is one thing missing for the most part, and that one thing is Bernard Samson.
Samson, in the previous books has been the central character. He is the MAIN THRUST this series has been built on. He is, of course, mentioned throughout this book, but his absence as an active character, to me, makes this a reference piece.
  • Bernard Samson is a spy working for the British Secret Service in 1987, but his duties are largely bureaucratic in nature. He travels frequently to Berlin because he is assigned to the "German desk", but that allows him to stay in touch with his close friends there. Samson's life has gone topsy-turvy since his wife, Fiona, defected to the KGB, three years or more ago, but he is convinced that Fiona did not defect, rather, that she is being used by the Secret Service as a mole. The higher ups in his office will not confirm his suspicions and they are furious with him for pursuing his own investigation into the truth behind Fiona's supposed defection. Those four sentences are the basic outline of the four previous Samson novels that have led up to Spy Line (Berlin Game, Mexico Set, London Match, and Spy Hook).
In Spy Line, Bernard continues to pursue the truth about Fiona, until the truth behind her defection is made clear. He travels to Berlin again and is told to cross into East Berlin and bring Fiona back to the West, but her retrieval and return become a nightmare as the Secret Service again imposes its will on Samson and Fiona in order to manipulate the truth behind Fiona's rescue. It's difficult to imagine reading this book without having first read the first four books detailed above. Samson is an unusual spy, a stubborn, but highly intelligent man. By the time you greet him again in Spy Line, you will feel as if you know him better than he knows himself, and as the book comes to a close with Bernard and Fiona in virtual imprisonment, you will understand exactly how frustrated and angry he feels.
Len Deighton is a wonderful author. You will love this book.
  • This is the 6th book in a 9-book series set during the cold war and featuring the adventures (and misadventures) of Bernard Samson, whose wife Fiona early on defects to the Russians. Bernard is never aware of the whole story -- the first five books and the last two are all written in first person, from Bernard's point of view. Spy Sinker allows a broader view, and fills in the reader on the full story. Not that living in Samson's head is any hardship. His acerbic take on everything from the British Secret Service to his colleagues and their wives enlivens every page. Of one straying wife, he remarks. "Her faithfulness would never be a subject for lyric poetry. Limericks, perhaps." These books are all wonderful. Start with Berlin Game and read straight through.
  • I have loved all of Mr Deighton’s books but this one is different. It seems to be everything he tries to avoid in his writing. The only character who comes out of it with any integrity is Bernard. The rest appear shallow, selfish, self indulgent. It looks as though it was written to a timeline rather than a plan. Enjoy the rest of the series and forgive this error of judgement.
  • Spy line continued the story of Bernard Sampson. Deighton wrote all his trilogies so that they may be read separate, although there is a continuous storyline. I wish he had not done so, we get a continuing redundancy of detail about each character and setting. The dilemmas you anticipate from the previous books does in fact occur and there is much less twist to the plot than in Game, Set, Match. I am left mangled in a difficult dilemma in the plot that does not get any attention before the book closes, and I assume that it will be taken up in his next trilogy. If these books were supposedly meant to be read in any order there should have been a resolution of any central dilemma. If you have already read the other books, then I recommend you read this one and keep going. That must have been his point in not solving the dilemma, but don't tell me they can be read separately.
  • We're dealing with Mr. Deus Ex Machina here (at least regarding plot). You get to see how the outline plays out - it's part of a series. And the people/characters have traction. Great at painting the Time and Place, and the Roles, putting them in context. Gorilla suit? I liked it, but not sure I should have.
  • Le Carre and Deighton are in a class of their own when it comes to the cold war era of spies. This Deighton novel follows up the first series of London Game, Mexico Set and Berlin Match and is the first book is the sequel series of another three books. Well crafted and featuring familiar characters, Deighton captures the reality of the spy fighting the British government secret service with its infighting, jealousies and politics typical of a large bureaucratic organization.

"My favorite read from childhood. I am once again re-reading it before going to sleep. Puts me in a very peaceful state. Terrific story, full of richly rendered characters and descriptive writing that evokes strong visualizations and emotionally evocative enough so those mental images stay forever. The illustrations are the same as the originals, and on glossy paper. This is a book to buy for any early teen age boy in particular. Buy extra copies and give them to the school library."

The Yearling NC Wyeth Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Books Reviews

  • As a young boy growing up in Florida, I was quite aware of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings classic novel, lovingly written while she was residing at a tiny community in east central Florida, now just a few miles from where I write this, called "Cross Creek" which was the title of a second book she authored, and then her book of annotated "old Florida" recipes called, "Cross Creek Cookery." The epic film made of "The Yearling" premiered at the Florida Theater in Sarasota, near Myakka Park where many of the scenes were filmed, with actors including Gregory Peck starring in the role of young Jody's stern, pioneer father. It has remained one of my favorite books, and I purchased this copy to include the original illustrations. I purchased the book as a gift to the young daughter of an acquaintance, who embodies the spirit of Jody, who originated in the author's mind as a young girl, the gender changed at the suggestion of the publishers who saw more acceptance by the reading public if it were so. The book remains an American classic, and should be on any serious student's reading list. Cross Creek is still there, not much changed from the river side community deep in the pine and oak woods, but now only minutes from Florida Route 301, an area I chose for my retirement, not much changed from the very early years of pioneer Florida, the background for the book. The author lovingly describes every detail of the lush surroundings, the bird and animal life, the magnificent trees and flowers, the pioneer life. The house where the author stayed for a year while writing it, is still there, and is now part of a State Park, dedicated to her memory, at Cross Creek.
  • If I were rating this book for the quality of the writing, it would be a hands-down five-star rating, but as a word-by-word measure of the pleasure I got out of reading the book, I have to give it four stars. There are so many compelling elements in this book that make it absolutely worth reading. The author's in-depth knowledge of life as it was in this neck of the woods at the time the story took place is phenomenal, along with her ability to convey it in great detail. It is the attention to detail when it comes to the descriptions of the natural environment that--while impressive and way beyond what I'd be able to do with environments with which I'm most familiar--almost led me to dismiss the book early on, led me to occasionally skim passages (which I would never do in a five-star book), and ultimately led to me to remove one star from my rating.

That being said, what kept me enthusiastic about reading the book was above all her ability to convey a sense of wonder in a growing boy, to keep the plot moving enough to make me curious about what would happen next, to tell an amazing story while bringing fascinating characters to life, and to vividly convey a very entertaining dialect. I'd love to be able to hang out for an evening and down some moonshine with these folks just to hear them talk. What continued to blow my mind was the fact that this book focused so deeply on a male perspective while being written by a woman--so much so that if this were written by a man it would now probably be censured for being misogynistic. Most of the women in this book come off as nagging, disreputable, or troublesome, and they are always secondary to the men; however, they are all brilliantly portrayed and believable.

I am personally glad that I encountered this book in my late-thirties. It seems like it used to be a staple for younger readers, but there's no way they'd appreciate so much of what is contained in these pages.
  • Just about everybody knows the story, has seen the movie. I bought the book on a whim (I'm 67 yrs old), and what a great surprise! I'm a pretty voracious reader, but I guess I do tend toward the older stuff than discovering new talent...I can't stand bad grammar, spoken or written, and it is ubiquitous, much so more these days than the "olden" days.
The book was written in 1938, by someone who loved where she lived, and about a subject she was well versed in, and her writing dislpays this love and knowledge throughout. The writing itslef shows how well she kmew her craft.
I think anyone would enjoy this book; a good story well told. Def recommend !

  • We saw the movie version with Gregory Peck a couple of weeks ago, and I decided to a copy of the novel. I'm glad I did, especially this version, which featured N.C. Wyeth's lovely illustrations. The volume I had as a child also had these pictures; I loved them then, and enjoyed them now. Nineteen years ago, we moved to Florida, and the description of the Everglades at the end of the 19th century, with its abundant flora and fauna, meant more to me now than it did then. While this may have been intended to be a children's book when Rawlings wrote it, I enjoyed it just as much this time because the characterizations were so vivid, especially that of Penny, the father. I wouldn't have appreciated him as much at the age of 8 as I do now, and I wouldn't have responded to Ory, the mother either. Their son, Jody, grows up before your eyes, and takes on the responsibilities of a frontier teen. This is a wonderful book, and worthy of a second look.
